The Urban Burial Park and Cathedral acts as a new means of worship for the Catholic community of Los Angeles. The proposal is meant to evoke a new understanding of the experience intended for worship and for memorial of the dead. The need for green space as well as the lack of burial space within the city, determined the need for an urban burial park in Downtown LA. By re-configuring the programmatic layout of Rafael Moneo’s Cathedral, a vertical strategy is used to define the new sacred territory, where the cathedral functions become elevated pavilions above the semi-open landscape of mausoleum and cremation garden below.
