Cindy Crawford

Students: Erin Besler, Paul Stoelting, Paul Trussler
Seminar Title: Robotic Confections & Confabulations (RoCoCo)
Instructor: Devyn Weiser
AT: Jonathan Stahl

Cindy Crawford participates in the tension between loose, painterly, gestural abstraction and the hard-edged, figuratively particular abstraction associated with Pop, initiated in mid-20th century American art. Roy Lichtenstein’s Brush Stroke paintings from the 1960’s, depicting apparently casual arrangements of conventional chromatic discharge, rendered with iconic specificity, and produced industrially, conflate this tension. The series is taken here to be a retroactive archetype for a marginal tendency toward aberrant “painterly” abstraction achieved through means of conceptual acuity, technical proficiency, and computational composition.

Translation

Students: Erin Besler
Studio Title: Testa ESTm Vertical Spring 2012 ‘Real-Time’
Instructor: Peter Testa
Research Fellows: Brandon Kruysman, Jonathan Proto, AT: Curime Batliner

This work involved subverting the inherent logic of space and time as characteristic of filmic things in order to capture change in material behavior.

Rainbows

Students: Erin Besler, Tyler Tyler McMartin, Paul Stoelting, Paul Trussler
Seminar Title: Robotic Confections & Confabulations (RoCoCo)
Instructor: Devyn Weiser
Research Fellows: Brandon Kruysman, Jonathan Proto

The Rainbow paintings address the most basic movements and capabilities of the robot to produce a number of highly specific, precisely inaccurate results in a series of aesthetic and technical inquiries. Adherence to brutally pragmatic formats allowed for careful testing and calibration of the painting instrument.

sPhysical

Students: Erin Besler, Eugene Kosgoron, Siim Tuksam, Peter A Vikar
Seminar Title: Testa ESTm Vertical Fall 2011 ‘Real-Time’
Instructor: Peter Testa
AT:Jonathon Stahl
Research Fellows: Brandon Kruysman, Jonathan Proto, AT: Jonathon Stahl

This project subsists on the translational discrepancies that arise during interplay between an excessively controlled but exceedingly irresolute digital environment and its materialization into the reality of physical space. sPhysical seeks the epitome of synthesizing digital tools with physical expression by re-conceptualizing material design processes and applications in the field of architecture.

Expression Based Switchable Rig

Students: Erin Besler, Eugene Kosgoron, Siim Tuksam, Peter A Vikar
Seminar Title: Synchronous Robotics
Instructor: Peter Testa
AT: Jonathon Stahl
Research Fellows: Brandon Kruysman, Jonathan Proto

This project explores the concept of rigging as the most basic and fundamental means of digital skeletal animation and robotic motion control while challenging conventional Inverse Kinematic Solver standards within the Maya environment.
