Gestural Fabrication

GESTURE+FORM+FABRICATION

This project is an investigation of the translation of real-time motion data into robotic motion paths. Through the implementation of an intuitive interface (which behind the scenes is comprised of: Leap motion + Rhino + Grasshopper + Firefly + Crane)  designers can go straight from fluid hand-motions to freeform physical objects. The goal is to circumnavigate mediation of the input by traditional 2D digital interfaces (mouse, keyboard, monitor), and allow for 3D input to translate directly to 3D output.

Interactive Robotic Fabrication

We present a series of experiments which explore the use of IPhone accelerometers as joint position sensors and ultrasonic as scanning sensor in order to rebuild a 3d surface. To quantify the performance of the calibration and joint tracking we attached accelerometer and ultrasonic sensor to staubli 160 robot for scanning a 3d surface while second robot draws a section trough the surface in real time. In this example the accelerometer sensor estimate the scanning robot joint 4 and 5 angel and control the position of end arm tool.

Layered Catenary

Starting with a single “hot wire”, students will develop various end effector prototypes. Experiments in burning, melting, extracting, depositing, dropping etc. will lead to strategies of addition, subtraction and re-additive fabrication, which will then be applied to a final figure.
